Prevention
Cancer prevention and education are among the highest priorities at RPCI. The Institute's Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program encompasses several efforts, ranging from collaborative bench research and population studies to community outreach and screening programs for high-risk populations.
One of the areas of increasing interest will be that of intermediate markers of disease, or the ability to recognize alterations in cells at a molecular level as they change from normal to cancerous. The ability to recognize these changes may enhance the design of drugs to block progression (chemoprevention) and lead to the use of these markers for the identification of high-risk populations.
Advances made at RPCI and worldwide during the 1990s have generated an unprecedented level of confidence that cancer prevention and control are more attainable than ever before.
